England 1537. Henry the Eighth is determined to close the monasteries, and his chief minister Thomas Cromwell is charged with the task. The monastery of Scarnsea on England's south coast is hanging on in the face of this onslaught, but then Cromwell's agent is found murdered in the monastery chapel. Cromwell sends hunchback lawyer  Matthew Shardlake to investigate, but there will be more deaths before his investigations are complete.
