A longtime proponent of adventurous, genre-bending jazz and global music,
saxophonist Michael Blake brings his boundary-breaking approach to new heights
on 2023's Dance of the Mystic Bliss. Having started his career as an integral
member of the eclectic New York jazz and art-rock group the Lounge Lizards,
Blake has established himself as one of the most unpredictable instrumentalists
to emerge from the Downtown scene, collaborating on projects with equally
exploratory performers like Steven Bernstein, Ben Allison, and Jamie
Leonhart. His own albums have found him digging into a wide array of sounds,
from Chinese folk traditions (1997's Kingdom of Champa), to ECM-style
atmospherics (2002's Blake Tartare), to swinging modern creative jazz (2014's
Tiddy Boom). He brings all this experience and more to bear on Dance of the
Mystic Bliss, a harmonically shimmering and textural production that showcases
