Organic compounds fall very naturally into groups or homologous series. Each series is characterized by common methods of preparation and similar chemical properties.
Similarity within the group is widely used in studying the subject. It is standard practice to study one member of each series in some detail, and to derive the chemistry of other members in the knowledge that they are of the same group. Inorganic chemistry may be treated in the same way—we can divide ‘oxides’ into types: acidic,
basic, amphoteric, etc., so that within each type the methods of preparation and the properties are similar
