Matthew Bourne has found something of a soul mate in UK-based Norwegian drummer
Emil Karlsen on this spiky and thoughtful set of improvisations that conjures
an uneasy and powerfully unsettling atmosphere so effectively. Karlsen is a
brittle, rugged foil to Bourne's quick-witted sleight of hand on a recording
that never overstates itself and is full of twists and turns. If you are a
free-improv fan, tired of the soft sweet centres you find on many a jazz
record, then you'll be craving a case of this hardy and satisfying vintage made
a couple of years ago and now ripe for extensive listening.
