Lalu (Rosalind Chao) is forced to leave China when her father sells her into slavery because of a famine. She ends up in Idaho married to a disgusting reprobate who runs a saloon in a gold camp. She rebels, starts her own laundry and falls n love with a white American. All the while she has to deal with the effects of violent racism. Based on a true story.
