Ignition (1997) (DOS / Win game) Ignition is an action packed racing game viewed from above and slightly behind the player. The cars on offer range from police car and VW Beetle to school bus and truck, each of which has its own strengths and weaknesses - trying to win with the bus, which involves blocking everyone behind the hideously slow vehicle for 3 laps, is perhaps the ultimate challenge. Initially there are 5 tracks available, with practice and single race modes as well as full championship at 3 levels - winning each of the first 2 levels unlocks an extra track. They all have hazards running through them, and sections where you must make a split-second choice between the safer route and the risky but potentially rewarding one. Multiplayer can be done via network or by split-screen - in a break with convention the screen is split vertically rather than horizontally. https://www.mobygames.com/game/ignition *** This version of the game is fully patched, with both the latest Windows and 3Dfx patch. You may or may not get the 3Dfx or DirectX exe to run in Linux with Wine. In any case, there's a start script included to start DOSBox (for both Windows and Linux). The Linux script is called 'start.sh', and the Windows counterpart is called 'start.bat'. The Windows launcher batch script is only 1 line, though you may need to change the path to the DOSBox executable if you have a different version installed. Extract 'ignition.7z' to get the game directory. 'start_scripts.7z' should be extracted inside the game directory. Extract 'ignition_cuebin_flac.7z' into the game directory as well, to get the in-game music. If you want to run the 3Dfx version of the game, you need to set up dgVoodoo (included in 'extra/'). 'ign_win.exe' is the Windows DirectX version of the game. *** If you run the Windows executables (ign_win.exe, ign_3dfx.exe), you need to burn the the CUE to a CD-R, to get in-game music. If you run the DOSBox start files (start.sh, start.bat), you get in-game music automatically, because the image file is mounted by DOSBox. Oh, and you need to have DOSBox installed on your system, if you want to run the DOS version of the game. *** File and directory names inside the game directory have been recursively changed to lowercase. It was a bit mixed originally. The game doesn't seem to care, and everything works. *** The BIN file, FLAC files and CUE sheet were made with this script: https://github.com/linux4ever07/scripts/blob/main/cuebin_extract.sh The source image file for the game is this Redump release: Ignition (USA) (En,Es,It,Sv) (Rerelease) This is the script I used to recursively lowercase the game directory: https://github.com/linux4ever07/scripts/blob/main/ch_case.sh Maybe these shell scripts can be helpful to other people who want to upload DOS games. I'm mostly uploading this as a proof-of-concept, to show how DOS games with CD audio can be packaged to save HDD space and bandwidth. Even though I'm using FLAC for the audio, this release is still smaller than the GOG release of the same game. It's because they store the music twice, both in the BIN file and as Ogg Vorbis files. *** To acquire good copies of games, I recommend browsing the Redump uploads on archive.org (https://archive.org/download/redump_pc_A). Simply change the letter "A" in the URL to whatever letter in the alphabet you need. You need an account @ archive.org to be able to download the games though
