Game Notes: ~~~~~~~~~~~ The perfect mix of genres, which was one of the strongest reason for ANNO 1602's outstanding success will also play a major role in the creation and design of TechnoMage. Therefore, the story and the action parts of the game will be inseparably entwined ... there lived in the fantastic world of Gothos a folk, one of many. This civilization never ceased to develop new ways to make life easier for all. It was not long, however, before their insatiable thirst for knowledge called forth a danger which did threaten all of Gothos. Hordes of monsters suddenly made their inexorable way to the surface from the underworld. It was only through a last, desperate feat of strength that this race was able to defeat the infernal hordes and save Gothos from certain destruction. Shortly thereafter did they disappear from Gothos, their destination unknown. Today, the world of Gothos is still a place where different civilizations live together in peace and harmony. Amongst these are the Dreamers and the Steamers. They respect one another, but prefer to go their separate ways. The reason lies in the age-old commandment, unwritten yet handed down from generation to generation, that these two races shall never mix. Peace in Gothos comes to a sudden end, when suddenly one day, the earth breaks up in Steamertown and terrible hordes of monsters and demons destroy big parts of the town. Out of the blue, long-lost and almost forgotten legends again take on their threatening shape. Raised in Dreamertown the TechnoMage has the unwanted status of an outsider. His parents, his father a Steamer and his mother a Dreamer, broke the unwritten law forbidding the two races to join with one another. When Steamertown narrowly escapes destruction, the Dreamers accuse the TechnoMage of being the cause of this disaster. Fleeing before they can pass judgment on him, he directs his steps towards Steamertown to look for his father and to see the extent of the catastrophe for himself. This is the first time that the inexperienced TechnoMage has left home. Disquieting visions accompany him, and the player, upon their way. The Dreamers' lives center around magic. Though no strangers to hard work, they prefer to use magic and their supernatural abilities to accomplish their daily tasks. To other people in the world of Gothos they often convey the impression of being a tiny bit arrogant and pert. Maybe this results from the fact that the Dreamers' skillful use of magic gives anything they do an airy and easy aspect. Seemingly, they find an easy way to solve any problem. Even difficult tasks will be executed in a playful manner. While doing this, the Dreamers take any chance there is to fully enjoy their eagerness in experimenting. And, knowing about all their supernatural abilities, who would be astonished to learn that the Dreamers are also a tiny little bit superstitious? The Steamers rely on their technical expertise in daily life. From the cradle they are fascinated by all things of a mechanical nature. Magic is for them strange and unnatural. Two of their most loveable traits of character are their modesty and their patience. They will always approach difficult tasks with great consideration and care. If the solution to the problem won't reveal itself at the first glance, they will steadily and patiently tinker or puzzle on until they will finally come to a satisfactory result. Well, the Steamers are just the born mechanics. As they are by no means people with their heads in the clouds, it is no wonder that they are being considered to be well rooted in the soil they live upon. The game starts in Dreamertown. Here lives our main character: TechnoMage. Because of his origin he has the unwanted status of an outsider. When monsters of the underworld destroy Steamertown the Dreamers accuse him of being the cause of this disaster. But they allow him to stay in Dreamertown until the next day, when he will have to face the judgment of the Dreamers' High Council. Like every day TechnoMage is working for his uncle, but because of the disaster he is very anxious today and his uncle sends him in the cellar where he has to search for a special thing. This task is the first riddle to be solved by the player and at the same time a chance for him to learn and practice the control of TechnoMage. The uncle is very preoccupied because of TechnoMage's insecure fate and future in Dreamertown. He advises him to leave Dreamertown and to go to his father, who still lives in Steamertown. With only a few provisions, TechnoMage flees. When TechnoMage reaches Steamertown, the city is still burning. In the chaos he tries to find his father, but his house is abandoned and he hasn't been seen for days. The Steamers are desperately looking for help. The fountain has been destroyed and therefore there is no chance to extinguish the fire in the power station. An explosion seems to be inevitable. Lucky enough, the TechnoMage is able to repair the fountain and the Steamers are more than grateful. By now they are convinced of his bravery and that is why they ask him on their behalf to set out and look for his father, who is still missing. The TechnoMage is sure that there is a connection between the vanishing of his father and the appearance of the monsters. He visits the pit from which the monsters had entered Steamertown and by accident he falls into the huge hole and enters the underworld - the Hive. The Hive is an enormous labyrinth of numerous branched tunnels. Here, darkness and an ominous atmosphere prevail. While TechnoMage is still searching for his father and the father's companions he will have to deal with fierce and insidious enemies. By chance he meets an injured Shach, whom he is able to help. The Shachs are traders who sell and buy nearly everything as long as the deal will be profitable for them. However, now, in return for the help offered, the Shach tells TechnoMage where to find his first armor, which proves to be a helpful protection against the numerous attacks of spiders and circlars. In the Hive TechnoMage does not only prove his fighting skills and meets his father for the first time in years, but he will also learn a lot about the origin of the Dreamers and Steamers as well as about another mysterious folk that seemed to have ruled Gothos a long time ago. The information the father has collected proves the admonition that the whole world of Gothos faces destruction, unless someone take up arms against the still unknown enemy. Just as father and son set out together to do what they have to do, an explosion separates them ... In this magical part of Gothos Melvin meets a lot of fantastic and also weird creatures, like goblins, druids, the mistresses of the seasons and trolls. When dealing with these beings and especially with the fairies Melvin has to proof that he is a real Dreamer. Only by using his magical abilities and diplomacy he is able to solve riddles, pass tests and settle conflicts. Melvin sets out to help the inhabitants of the forest by protecting them against the evil. The most dangerous enemy he has to face is the river poisoner who poisons the water resources of the forest. In order to win the fight against this monster, the fairy princess gives Melvin a special and mighty crystal with some magic functions. This crystal will not only help him, but will also have major impact on his own life.
