Crisis Behind a Presidential Commitment (1963) ABC News EN_sub Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment In defiance of a Federal order, George Wallace, the Democratic Governor of Alabama, in a symbolic attempt to keep his inaugural promise of "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever," and stop the desegregation of schools, stood at the door of Foster Auditorium at the University of Alabama on June 11, 1963, to block the entry of two African American students, Vivian Malone and James Hood, who were due to arrive to enroll. Five ABC News camera crews were given unprecedented access to the principal characters the day before, and the day of, the anticipated confrontation, including access to the Oval Office. The film is considered among the landmark films of cinéma vérité, or "direct cinema". Directed by Robert Drew Produced by Robert Drew Gregory Shuker Starring: - John F.
