È un?antologia di musica sacra e canti spirituali di epoche e stili diversi. Sedici composizioni, alcune già famose, come Panis angelicus di César Frank e Ave Maria di Bach/Gounod entrati nella tradizione e in un repertorio religioso-sentimentale universale. Altri, il Kyrie di Paolo Rustichelli, l?Ave Maria di Placido Domingo jr. secondo dei tre figli del grande tenore spagnolo, o la Preghiera di Fermìn Maria Alvarez, sono forse meno noti e possono quindi costituire una piacevole novità. Due canti sono stati trascritti per due voci. Alla voce di Placido Domingo si unisce così quella di Sissel, attrice e cantante norvegese. Si tratta di un?Ave Maria, trascrizione dell?Intermezzo della Cavalleria rusticana di Pietro Mascagni e dell?aria Bist du meir mir. Nella versione vocale l?appassionata melodia strumentale di Mascagni esalta la spiritualità del testo mariano. Completano il compact la Ninna-nanna con coro di Schubert, il recitativo e aria Ombra mai fu di Haendel, Domine Deus di Rossini, Climb Ev?ry Mountain di Richard Rodgers, un Lied di Wagner, il recitativo e aria dall?Elias di Mendelssohn e Preghiera di Tosti, un programma ricco e variato, interpretato con grande sensibilità da Placido Domingo, accompagnato dal Coro e dall?Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi diretta da Marcello Viotti

Pla´cido Domingos «Sacred Songs» er helt etter oppskriften - omtrent slik: Ta en av verdens mest kjente og imponerende mannstemmer, spe forsiktig med en av verdens mest inntagende kvinnestemmer (selveste Sissel Kyrkjebø), og anrett henne trygt i skyggen av heltetenoren. 
Dryss over gyllen harpe- og gitarklimring her og der, pluss en stråle lunkent cellospill, et stenk av synthesizer og en dæsj kor. 
Bak det hele med rikelig av smektende strykere og pompøse orkesterarrangementer, og sørg for å dele ut alle små overraskelser tidlig på platen, slik at gleden over gjenkjennelige melodier, en god stemme (Domingo), og en mer middelmådig (Sissel, mildt sagt ujevn som klassisk sanger), så godt som drukner i kjedelig kitsch på høyt nivå. 
Det som måtte være igjen av en andektig følelse til slutt - etter Mascagnis «Ave Maria», Francks «Panis Angelicus» og ikke minst Rodgers «Climb Ev'ry Mountain» - kan lagres og brukes i årets kommende julestemning.

In February 2002, Plácido Domingo spent some time in the recording studio. The result is Sacred Songs, a 16-track disc of music which spans three centuries. There are a few favourites here, such as the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria and "Ombra mai fu" from Handel's opera Serse. But it's not all familiar--Sacred Songs has plenty of surprises too. 
The collection opens with an arrangement of the much loved Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana where Domingo is joined by the Norwegian soprano Sissel. She appears on one other track but her breathy voice is no match for the great tenor. Next up is a setting of the Kyrie by the Italian composer Paolo Rustichelli (b. 1953) which almost takes the disc into pop territory with its synthesizers and guitar solo. Plácido Domingo Jr turns up as the composer of another Ave Maria setting, preceded by his father's cringing rendition of "Climb Ev'ry Mountain". 
The Coro Sinfonico di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, which makes three appearances, is not on good form so the rendition of Franck's "Panis angelicus", where a cello replaces the chorus, is even more welcome. A mixed bag overall but definitely one for Domingo devotees
