Reproduced in this book are twenty eight Chinese paintings dating from what is generally acclaimed as the peak period of this art, the Sung and Yuan dynasties, from the tenth to the fourteenth centuries. Eighteen of the plates are in color. The pictures are chosen, for the most part, from Japanese collections, and include many which have been treasured for centuries in Buddhist temples.

Especially well represented are the paintings of the Southern Sung imperial academy 
flowers, birds, animals, figures, landscapes and the works of the great Ch'an (Zen) Buddhist priest painters of the late Sung period, whose swift and spontaneous creations in black ink appeal so powerfully to the modern Western temperament
