This is a history of film. As in the Jean-Luc Godard title A Married Woman (1964), the indefinite article should indicate that this is only one kind of film history. When Godard later entitled a film of his A Film Like All the Others (1968), he was of course being ironic. Just as no film, let alone that one, is like all others, no two histories of film can be the same; many valid and illuminating approaches to the subject are available
