Burnout is a street racing game with a focus on racing in traffic. A major focus of the game are the car wrecks. This game set the standard for realistic car crash simulation of the day. Being the first in a series that is still alive today, it is an iconic original. The game recieved an "E for Everyone" rating from Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) with the content descriptor "Mild Violence."

The original Burnout was developed by the British game developer Criterion Games using their 3D API and graphics rendering engine by the name of RenderWare Platform. It was officially published by the now bankrupt Acclaim Entertainment in late 2001. It was released for the Play Station 2 on 2001.11.06 in North America, and on 2001.11.16 in Europe. It was also released the following year for the Gamecube and Xbox.
