Anthony Braxton / Maral Yakshieva Improvisations (Duo) 2008 2009 - SoLyd Records: SLR 0383/4 http://www.solyd-records.ru/ * Anthony Braxton: saxophones * Maral Yakshieva: piano http://tricentricfoundation.org/anthony-braxton/ http://www.letov.ru/maral.htm Recorded 12 July 2008 at Wesleyan University Music Department (http://www.wesleyan.edu/), Middletown, CT (Connecticut), USA. Review ~~~~~~ By Bruce Lee Gallanter http://search2.downtownmusicgallery.com/lookup.cgi?item=2010_03_05_18_02_29 [...] This double disc set was recorded in July of 2008 at Wesleyan University where Mr. Braxton is a professor. The sound is superb and has been recorded and mastered by Jon Rosenberg. The first disc is appropriately called "Improvisations 1" and the duo wind their way into a long journey-like set of stories. At first Mr. Braxton is playing a sopranino sax sublimely while Ms. Yakshieva plays elegant, dream-like piano. Braxton then switches to alto while Maral plays an exquisite solo passage. Mr. Braxton seems more reflective than usual, his tone, the warmest and most enchanting in recent memory. The tempo and the tension increases as the duo take off with more flurries of notes, intertwining marvelously in tight spirals. This entire disc has a most relaxed vibe as if both of the musicians have been playing together for many years and feel completely comfortable. About halfway through the first disc, Braxton plays this cool melody which Ms. Yakshieva picks up on and the duo weave their ideas around that melody for a bit anticipating each other's lines. Each of these two discs is over 50 minutes long and each disc is filled with some magnificent, magical improvising. Yet another treasure from the vast Braxton catalogue of wonders.
