Sconfitto l'apartheid, Nelson Mandela, capo carismatico della lotta contro le leggi razziali, diventa presidente del Sudafrica grazie alle libere elezioni. Anche il mondo dello sport viene coinvolto dall'evento: il Sudafrica si vede assegnato il mondiale di Rugby del 1995 e sulla scena internazionale ritornano gli Springboks, la nazionale sudafricana dagli anni '80 bandita dai campi di tutto il mondo a causa dell'apartheid. Il rugby, infatti, è sempre stato lo sport più seguito dagli Afrikaner e ai cittadini sudafricani di colore veniva riservato negli stadi un misero settore, di solito occupato per tifare la squadra avversaria. In occasione della cerimonia di apertura del campionato mondiale, l'ingresso in campo del presidente Mandela che indossa la maglia di jersey degli Springboks segna un passo decisivo nel cammino verso la pace tra bianchi e neri. A collaborare con lui a questo progetto di integrazione e pacificazione attraverso lo sport, Francois Pienaar, il capitano della nazionale Sudafricana.
